Come and meet the impressive director of A+ Architects, Gawie Roux. His work includes designing the Apollo Air (PTY) LTD (Warehouse) and New Superman (Church), which featured a unique architectural design brief.

Gawie Roux is the director and principal architect of A+ Architects, a young architecture studio based in Durbanville. “We started in 2016 with smaller scale commissions that dramatically changed over the past couple of years, and in 2019 we finished our largest project to date, the New Superman and Apollo Air building next to the R300, which has a combined total floor area of 5950 m2”.

A+ Architects serve a broad range of clients. As seen in their work, they serve the needs of a broad spectrum of individuals and enterprises.

“We have been fortunate to have received a variety of commissions from various building sectors over the past couple of years. We have completed several bespoke residences for private clients together with a large indoor play centre at Haasendal Gables shopping centre for the Playalot group. We were responsible for the renovation of the restaurant kitchen at Leopard’s Leap Vineyards in Franschhoek and the design of our second church building commission”. Gawie Roux

Our story began in 1967 when Pieter Laubscher Construction started designing and manufacturing steel products and buildings in the Northern Cape primarily catering for the agricultural market which dominates in the area. Through the years, our family-run business has established a sound foundation in the steel construction industry through all our valued clients.

In support of the agriculture sector, LEMCO has partnered with Bredasdorp Park and NAMPO Cape and have erected a new structure which will now accommodate all emergency services and personal during events.

Bredasdorp Park Director, Chrystal van Wyk added that this partnership has added more value to their facilities at Bredasdorp Park. “We’re privileged to join forces with LEMCO. And look forward to a long-term relationship with them.”

Planning for NAMPO Cape 2020 has already started, with the dates 8-11 September 2020 at Bredasdorp Park, confirmed. Simultaneously, the 2020 Merino Classic was awarded to NAMPO Cape with the promise to showcase some of the best merinos in South Africa under one roof. The future involvement of other organised agricultural bodies, including Vinpro, will continue to grow and the vegetable industry will enter the show as a newcomer. With these exciting prospects and future changes, NAMPO Cape 2020 promises to exceed each and everyone’s expectations – indeed it is proving to be the agricultural exhibition in the South – Bredasdorp Park

Best Cheer Stone’s exclusive quarries in Namibia consistently deliver high-quality, exotic stone which includes nine + exotic granites and four + unique white marble products.

Previously the raw marble mined in Karibib was transported via road to Walvis Bay in large dimension heavyweight blocks which were then cut into smaller sized blocks, slabs and mosaics pieces.

Their need for investment in a new processing plant arose from global demand increase, and the decision was made to build the new processing plant closer to the quarries.

With a new facility in Karibib nearer to the quarries, the marble is then processed onsite into the different products minimising the distance which marble waste would need to travel.

LEMCO was contacted in Feb 2018 to quote for Best Cheer Stone with the expansion of the new processing plant in Karibib. On first contact Best Cheer Stone provided LEMCO with a set of pre-drawn plans, requesting LEMCO’s to quote on the design.

As LEMCO specialises in turnkey steel solutions, we were able to value engineer the design and develop concept drawings within 72 hours and personally present to Best Cheer Stone Marble within three days at their premises in Walvis Bay. From there on our relationship evolved and we were awarded the project for the new marble processing facility in Karibib. A 9200m² warehouse designed to house overhead cranes over the full floor area of the structure.

Construction started on site in August, and the project has since grown to include another three structural steel structures which have been added onto the original building.

Thus far, the project was successful and to satisfy the clients required to programme an extra effort is put in by working well into the annual builders break.

LEMCO was awarded with the design and supply of the steel construction for Number Two Piggeries, Chalala Pig Farms just outside of Malmesbury with Phase 1 being 55000m² which was started in 2011 and Phase 2 following at 71000m² in 2014.

“We were looking for a company with the ability to build our required size, it’s not normal for a piggery or a farming enterprise building to be built to the size which we required. Building is not our trade and we needed guidance, information and assistance in planning this new process which LEMCO could offer. My first business of choice is LEMCO because of the experience I have had with them on our first project. Pricing and quality is always important. It’s always nice to work with LEMCO, they have very capable employees doing the erecting and sheeting. Their advice was very good and they handled everything promptly. LEMCO’s workshop hosts some of the most cutting-edge machinery our industry has to offer which was a perfect match for fabricating the steel components needed for Chalala’s high-tech piggery. Chalala Pig Farms multi-site production unit consists of a breeding unit, a nursery and three growers sites.

In 2016 The National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor) set out on a project to build a new horse mackerel processing facility in Walvis Bay named Seaflower Pelagic Processing (Pty) Ltd.

LEMCO was selected to assist with the concept and design through to the manufacturing and physical installation of the new Seaflower processing facility.

“When contracted we immediately scheduled a concept meeting to understand Seaflower’s needs. The requirements of the client was a fast track programme. Designing from a blank canvas, it took us 7 days to produce the initial 3D design, using one of the worlds most advanced structural steel detailing software brands, Tekla Structures. After the design was further refined and signed off by Seaflower, LEMCO was ready to start with the manufacturing of components.” Andries Laubscher, CEO of Lemco Holdings commented.

Walvis Bay, Namibia’s coastal environment is highly corrosive due to the prevailing winds, airborne salts and the frequent fog, so construction materials had to be chosen with care. LEMCO selected Aluminium roof sheeting together with their galvanised hybrid steel structure which would withstand this harsh environment.

Once the design was approved LEMCO’s construction team were on site within 3 weeks laying the concrete bases for the 13700m² project. Within a further 7 weeks LEMCO had fabricated and transported all steel sections required to site. It took LEMCO only 8 weeks to erect the entire steel structure for The Seaflower Factory, completing the project at a phenomenal speed while keeping to all health, safety and quality standards.

All in all, the new Seaflower Pelagic Processing plant was a successful project that allowed LEMCO to showcase their expertise in the Design and Supply of Factories, Distribution centres and Warehouses as well as their effective processes to achieve the shortest possible lead times.
